In times of uncertainty and change, the adage: “Experience is the Best Teacher” is apropos. As leaders, we often find ourselves at the crossroads, realizing that perhaps that we need to move in a different direction. Something may be propelling us to look elsewhere…we may discover the need to take our business in another direction and our team in another direction.
The reason we may find ourselves in this situation is because of the collection of experiences that we’ve had that are telling us to go in another direction. I’ve found that when I am around leaders who can draw on their experiences and see that as a strength, even when some of those experiences may not have been positive, ultimately, they’re able to recognize: “What have I learned from this? “What can I take away from this, and bring into the next situation?” When a leader can demonstrate that they are open to change and personal growth, their teams benefit by witnessing first hand that leaders is setting an example. It becomes evident to your employees that you yourself have had teachable moments and you’ve learned from those experiences too.
Sometimes when other people are stuck, it’s really helpful for you to be able to show them the way based on your experience, the lessons that you’ve learned and how you’ve been able to move forward as a result. When you demonstrate that these teachable moments have served a purpose and you share those lessons with humility, it is an attractive trait in the eyes of your workforce. People will appreciate your transparency and “humanness”. Ultimately, it helps make you a leader that people want to be around… a leader that people want to stay for.
