Transformational Leadership: Idealized Influence

April 29, 2020 by Michelle Ray

Graphic title for Transformational Leadership: Idealized Influence

What does “idealized influence” mean? And why is this important for leaders? Leaders play a significant role in the lives of their workforce. Transformational leaders can affect the trajectory of an individual’s professional and personal life. There are many people who have profoundly influenced my thinking and decision-making throughout my career and personal history. The majority occupied a leadership position with a past employer or a client that I have been fortunate to get to know well. Others have been role models, or individuals that I greatly admired outside of work.  They all had one trait in common: The capacity to inspire me to take a positive step to improve myself or take a particular course of action. The degree to which a leader is able to affect people and create a desire in others to willingly change is directly related to their character.

Are you are leader who is comfortable taking risks, making decisions and keeping your ego in check? Great leaders possess the ability to harness these attributes at the appropriate time. Of course, not all decisions have equal weight or quality. The same is true in an array of circumstances that require leaders to evaluate the degree of risk in order to decide the best course of action. How to Tap Into Your Innovative Potential

April 1, 2020 by Michelle Ray

Graphic title for How to Tap Into Your Innovative Potential

If you have experienced self-doubt, or too many occasions where you have allowed the negative voices to take over and limit your innovative potential, you can likely recall how those thoughts made you question your abilities…sending you on a downward spiral. Self-belief is the reverse of self-doubt.  As cliched as it may sound, we can easily manufacture a lack of belief in ourselves as soon as we buy into fear, or any negative occurrence that can fuel disappointment, disenchantment and disillusionment. Realize the leverage of modeling authenticity and integrity

January 15, 2020 by Michelle Ray

Graphic title for Realize the leverage of modeling authenticity and integrity

Authenticity and integrity are essential character traits that leaders need to develop in order to build trusting relationships with their teams. Research confirms the direct correlation between leaders who demonstrate these traits and employees’ levels of trust, engagement and buy-in. For some leaders, their greatest challenge is determining the level of disclosure and transparency whether sharing large scale company news or admitting a mistake. Put simply, how and when to practice humility. Your capacity to be honest will be refreshing and attractive from your team’s perspective. When a leader displays authenticity, employees are more likely to follow and feel equally comfortable to share their own vulnerabilities. Even more significant is the positive impact of authentic leadership on your organization’s culture and employee brand.

Why is transformational leadership so important today?

January 8, 2020 by Michelle Ray

Graphic title for Why is transformational leadership so important today?

The pace of technological change necessitates a fluid, flexible approach, a shift in thinking and a willingness on the part of leaders to be ready for on-going transformation of their organizations. In order to meet the challenge, leaders need to be prepared to undertake an honest appraisal of their individual style by asking themselves whether they are effectively setting the vision for future success. The expectations of your workforce, as well as your customers continue to evolve. Therefore, it is a leader’s responsibility to challenge the status quo, take the lead and inspire their employees to transcend self-imposed boundaries, both personal and organizational, in order to adapt and embrace new realities. The transformational leader is able to raise the bar for  all by employing a charismatic, daring an open style.

It really does start with you!

December 11, 2019 by Michelle Ray

graphic title for It really does start with you!

When you think of the word leadership, what comes to mind? It isn’t surprising that the majority of people associate specific meanings to leadership that include authority, position, seniority, being at the helm of an enterprise, or having ultimate responsibility for bottom line results. However, in order to achieve success as a leader, one needs to have the capacity to take charge of oneself first.  To be a quintessential leader requires a specific mindset, along with certain professional traits and attributes that inspire individuals to perform at his or her best. Sadly, many leaders fail to understand the need to practice personal leadership in all interactions.

Therefore, the essence of leadership is about strength of character, regardless of one’s position in an organization, association, political party etc. In addition, we may falsely assume that a person’s “title” denotes credibility. As many of us have experienced, credibility must be earned rather than given. And this has nothing to do with a plaque on a door or a desk, or a title on a business card. It’s about who you are at the core that truly matters, rather than what your title indicates.

So no matter what your role is in an organization, no matter what industry you work in, it’s not about your job or “pecking order” in your organization. What is most important is to understand that leadership is a choice. It is a reflection of how you see yourself. Are you an initiator? A change agent? A provocateur? Do you have the capacity to inspire yourself and take responsibility for your actions? Leadership really does start with you.

Whether you are on the front line, or a senior leader,  or perhaps running the company…running your business, you are  ultimately accountable for your own behaviours, choices and how you decide to interpret your circumstances.

In the workplace, we are all one hundred percent responsible for creating the atmosphere. We all make a contribution everyday that leads to a particular culture.  It’s about you being conscious of who you are and it’s about your character that truly matters above all else.

What are you doing on a daily basis to take the lead in your professional and personal relationships? Ultimately, relationships with your colleagues and on a grander scale, with all everyone that you interact with? You have an opportunity on a daily basis to be the best version of you, to mentor others, contribute to your workplace and lead by example. In short: We can all choose to become the leaders of our own lives.

Leaders have a responsibility to Educate and be Educated

July 24, 2019 by Michelle Ray

There’ll never be a day where we can say we know it all. And the responsibility to continue our learning, continue to educate ourselves, and be educated by others has never been greater. we’re in an environment today where so much information is available in a split second.

So, sometimes we feel like it’s hard to keep up. But our own experiences are also learning experiences. And we can share those experiences with others, because people are craving knowing about what it takes to be successful in their careers, in their businesses, in their lives.

So we are all life long learners, and we all contribute to the conversation. And remember, it was Eric Hoffer who once said, “The learners shall inherit the Earth, whilst the learned will continue to live in a world that no longer exists.”

Leadership Styles – The Laissez-Faire Leader

March 28, 2019 by webadmin

Leadership Secrets, Michelle Ray Videos

There are many highly effective leadership styles. Every leadership style has a time and a place. The laissez-faire leader, for example, is one who recognizes that people have the ability to take the work and just run with it.

They are not micromanagers. A laissez-faire leader recognizes that that is the optimum style for people who know what they’re doing. Now I know that this sounds very obvious. The truth is that there are some people who do need more guidance. They do need a more hands-on type of leader because they are still learning their position. They are learning their role. They are still learning the tasks associated with their job.

So a laissez-faire style leader is one who really understands that people are already well-equipped to do their job and they don’t need a lot of interference or interjection from their manager in terms of what they’re doing and how they’re doing it.
