Genuine Consistency and Authentic Leadership

August 7, 2019 by Michelle Ray

There is nothing worse than going into work and not knowing what to expect from a manager, a person in a position of leadership.

I don’t know if you’ve had that experience, but it’s something that I have had happen in my career, and it doesn’t make us feel very comfortable because we don’t know what to expect. What kind of mood is that person gonna be in? How do they operate, are they operating consistently?

Now, when we use the word consistency, I’m thinking of that in a positive way. So everything they do, there is a level on consistency. Not necessarily predictability, but a leader, a manager is demonstrating that they are dependable; that, again, they can be trusted; that their words match their actions, and you do know what to expect from that person.

You do know that you’re gonna be supported, you know that you’re gonna be trusted to do what you need to do. So, remember as a leader that when you can genuinely display consistency in everything you do, it goes hand in hand with being an authentic leader.

Accountability Starts with You

August 2, 2019 by Michelle Ray

Leadership & accountability

Picture this: you’re now the executive producer of a movie, and your workplace is a movie set.

Every day you have a cast and crew show up. Their job is to create a “blockbuster”–a smash hit—so you have more customers, greater profitability, and increased success.

But then you hear them say things like:

“It’s not my job, I just work here,” or, “It’s not my responsibility.”

Integrity is the key to Authentic Leadership

July 31, 2019 by Michelle Ray

Integrity is definitely one of my favorite words.

If you possess this quality, you are an authentic leader because people can see that you are true to your word. You shoot from the hip. You say it the way it is. You are a person who means what you say and people get that feeling from you. You’re not giving platitudes for the sake of giving platitudes. You are trustworthy. You really are a person who is a person of your word and I don’t know how many leaders I have had in my life who have possessed this quality but, when they do, it’s really easy to work for a person who possesses a high level of integrity because it’s very attractive.

It’s something that I felt very comfortable with and I know that for you as a leader, your team are gonna feel more and more comfortable with you when they can see that you are genuine and that you are consistently practicing integrity in all of your interactions. Be the authentic leader who practices integrity.

How Millennials are Reshaping Corporate Culture

July 17, 2019 by Michelle Ray

According to recent research, millennials would be willing to give up $7600 of their annual salary to find a job where they felt they were experiencing a better environment. Just think about that for a moment.

Think about the fact that this is a completely different mindset, and a different attitude in contrast to generations that preceded them. It also tells us something about the importance of culture to today’s workforce. So we often think about, is that person the right fit? But now I want you to be thinking about the fact that they are also considering whether your business, your organization, is the right fit for them.

So, culture is critical when it comes to talent retention, and keeping great people happy for the long-term, and attracting those people to make sure that they are the right fit for your organization, as much as they are considering you as their employer of choice.

Lead with the Heart

July 10, 2019 by Michelle Ray

Are you a leader who cares about long-term results? And when I say long-term results, I’m not just talking about the bottom line and having a healthy bottom line. I’m talking about being a leader who really takes the time and recognizes that effort and hard work that goes into achieving great results, that it’s okay to have setbacks.

It’s okay to make mistakes, and it’s okay to not just be checking all the boxes to see whether or not you’re covering what needs to be done but also that you have your eye on the future, that you’re conscious of being that visionary and that it’s okay if, perhaps, you don’t necessarily have the results you want in the short term but that all those setbacks will ultimately lead to an extraordinary long-term payoff, and it may not necessarily only be profitability.

It can be the way that your team responds to you, that they feel a part of the culture, and this is all because long-term results are also associated with building trust. We can’t automatically get our team to trust us. It takes time for them to really genuinely believe you as a leader. So all of that will pay huge dividends as long as you are focused on being the absolute best that you can be, the best genuine, caring, authentic leader that you can be.

Great leaders share success and let others shine

June 12, 2019 by Michelle Ray

One of the biggest turnoffs for just about anyone at work, is to be around a leader who takes all the credit.

It’s very important, if you wanna practice authentic leadership, to share your successes with the team, to share team success, to not be the person who is only focused on yourself, and thinking to yourself, well I’m automatically gonna look good when they look good. Now that’s gonna happen. But when your total focus is on you, and wanting to look good of the sake of looking good, your team is gonna recognize that in a heartbeat. And it really does turn people off. And they notice that about you.

So, remember that getting the team excited about success is an intangible motivator. And that means it’s something that you can’t put a price on. So why would you wanna take all the credit and have people feel like they made no contribution? That can be easily remedied by taking a step back, being humble, and recognizing that people can bask in their own glory of success. And you helped to make that happen.

“Dead Wood” Employees

Motivating dead wood employees

This article was originally posted on November 9, 2016, and has been updated.

“I’m done.” If an employee is telling you this, it means she has reached her limit. For one reason or another.

It could have nothing to do with low morale, lack of opportunity, or a dislike of her job.

She may be ready to move up, move on or begin a new chapter in her life.

All perfectly reasonable reasons to leave a position.

However, she may have shut down or become apathetic. Or maybe she is sucking the life out of her co-workers by being negative day in and day out.

Also known as a “dead wood employee”.

Why humility is important in Leadership

June 5, 2019 by Michelle Ray

When I think back to my career and one of the most influential leaders in my history at work, it was an individual who practiced tremendous humility and I found it to be an incredibly attractive quality. This was a person who was very transparent and always willing to let us know when she had made a mistake and whenever she was successful, she also knew how to be humble and there wasn’t a lot of room for her ego in her leadership style and today people are still craving that humility for their leaders and from their leaders.

You see, humility is not humiliation. Humility is strength. Humility is a willingness to display that you are human and that you do make mistakes, so be the humble leader because when you are the humble leader, you are the authentic leader and that will add to your repertoire of skills that will make you successful for years to come.

One of the most decorated war veterans in Australia was a fellow by the name of Sir Edward Dunlop and he had this to say about humility. He says the ideal leader is the servant of all able to display humility without the loss of authority. Humility as a leader is one of the most desirable qualities that you can posses. It’s what makes you authentic, it’s what makes you attractive to your workforce.

So, remember, humility is something that all of us can tap into. All we need to do is show our true selves and show up in total integrity and honesty.
